AERIAL VIEW OF DEMO OF INDORE PIT METHOD |
It was discovered by Howard in
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PLANT INDUSTRY in INDORE. It is also
known as rural compost as it is mostly practised in rural areas.
In this method ,
Firstly a pit of length 30
feet, width 2 feet & depth 14 feet is dug .(The size of the pit can
be adjusted according to the availability of raw materials). Then the pit is
filled with dried leaves , twigs, ash, mud and organic waste materials
.The pit should be filled in such a way that each material is filled up to 6
inches and between each raw material starter material should be added .The
starter material used is cow dung and urine mixture. The filling material
should be filled in the pit up to 2 feet above ground level and should be
left undisturbed for 3 months ,so that the compost gets ready .
Holes are made at 2nd ,4th ,8th, week for
the aeration purpose .Hence this method is semi aerobic method .
DISADVANTAGE : foul smell is
produced from the pit.
